Meet the Principal

Lucas Roof, Principal
Lucas Roof

I am honored and elated to be part of the West Fannin Elementary School family. I graduated from 5th Grade at West Fannin Elementary School in 1993, and my mother graduated from West Fannin High School in 1970. West Fannin is home to me. I am ultimately here at WFES to be a supportive role model for and to have a major impact on every student that walks through the doors. I am also here to maintain a positive culture and a collaborative environment that cultivates student success. I believe that all students can progress and succeed if the right doors are open for them to grow and flourish. One of my goals is to assist in making WFES a physically and psychologically safe place where students learn to value academic achievement, integrity, and citizenship. I also want to build and uphold a climate where students take academic risks, embrace learning from mistakes, and think critically to solve real-world problems. This type of climate parallels the philosophies behind Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. My personal vision is that all students, teachers, and leaders will maximize individual gifts on a daily basis. My personal mission is to provide meaningful academics to all students, which will allow them to take ownership of their education and value lifelong learning. I believe that the best way to show love to a student is to encourage and help drive that student to be the best that he or she can possibly be. I am here to assist in making this happen for the students of WFES because I want WFES and the Fannin County School System to maximize their potential. I also want to encourage and challenge students at WFES to believe and live by the following quote.

"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift" -- Steve Prefontaine

I graduated from Fannin County High School in 2000 with an academic seal and vocational seal. I obtained a bachelor's degree in Mathematics Education from the University of Georgia in 2004. I then attained a master's degree in Gifted Education and Educational Psychology from the University of Georgia in 2006. Soon after graduating with my master's degree, I began teaching high school mathematics, coaching cross-country, and coaching varsity boys' tennis at Forsyth Central High School in Cumming, GA. Throughout my time there, I taught the following mathematics courses: Algebra 2, Honors Algebra 2, Euclidean Geometry, Honors Euclidean Geometry, Math 2, Math 2 Support, Math 3, Math 4, Accelerated Math 2, Accelerated Math 3, Accelerated Analytic Geometry, and Calculus. I was the Forsyth Central High School STAR Teacher in 2010 and the Forsyth Central High School Teacher of the Year in 2013. I was also fortunate enough to teach within and assist in laying the foundation for the prestigious STEM Academy at Forsyth Central High School, which is STEM certified through the state of Georgia. In 2012, I obtained my specialist degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development. I then obtained a Performance-Based Leadership Endorsement from Kennesaw State University in 2014.

From 2014 to 2016, I served as the assistant principal at Blue Ridge Elementary School under the guidance of Mrs. Shannon Miller. I am grateful for the phenomenal job that she did of grooming me for future leadership roles. Then, in the summer of 2016, I was hired as the principal of West Fannin Elementary School. I feel blessed for this opportunity to come back home.

My wife, Miranda Roof, teaches at Blue Ridge Elementary School, East Fannin Elementary School, and West Fannin Elementary School as the ALPHA program teacher for the gifted and talented. My wife and I are avid runners who enjoy exercise. My wife also obtained bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Georgia. Thus, we are huge Georgia Bulldogs fans. We have a daughter named Lila Quinn Roof, who will turn 3-years-old on August 9th. We also have a 10-year-old schnoodle named Zoe, whom we treat like a child. Lila and Zoe also both enjoy running.

I am truly here to serve the students, parents, community members, and all other stakeholders surrounding WFES. Please feel free to reach out to me.
